DESCRIPTION
Not yet known to critics is this panel depicting the Pietà, in the Nordic sense of the Vesperbild, with a Virgin on a throne, marked by years and pain, who holds on her knees the dead body of her Son, of dimensions contracted by comparison, purposely to allude to the child she had held in her lap. With her right hand she supports his head, with his eyes half-closed, while her right is lowered, in a gesture of deploration and an invitation to the viewer to pity her.
