LOMBARD SCULPTOR

15th – 16th century

WORK TITLE

Salome receives the Baptist’s head from Herod in the presence of Herodias

DATE OF THE WORK

Last quarter of 15th century – beginning of 16th century

MATERIAL

Polychrome and gilded wooden carved panel

MEASURES

48.5 x 48.5 x 7 cm

DESCRIPTION

The very evident glimpse suggests that the panel was originally intended as a lateral scene on the left margin of a large historiated frame very similar to those made by Lorenzo da Mortara in Vigevano and Mortara (Ancona of San Giuseppe in the church of San Lorenzo). Chronologically, the stylistic references point to the sculptural products of the last quarter of the 15th century and the very first decade of the 16th century.

One could hypothesize that this panel belongs to a group articulated on the theme of the Baptist or more generally to a series of biblical episodes.
