DESCRIZIONE

The truth of the meeting between the Roman pope and Attila, king of the Huns, although recorded by Paulus Diaconus, remains shrouded in legend. Leo the Great, did however in fact lead a Roman diplomatic mission in 452, which met with the leader of Caucasian origin who known in his time as Flagellum Dei (of ‘Scourge of God’), probably at the place where tradition has it, i.e. at the confluence of the Po and the Mincio rivers. The king of the Huns brought his southward march to a halt, though this may not have been solely due to the exhortations of the pope, who was unable, shortly afterwards, to prevent the devastating sack of Rome by Genseric’s Vandal hordes in 455.
